Ventura Photowalk Wrap-up

24 January, 2008 (14:57) | flickr, photowalking, southern california, ventura, zooomr | By: acejr371

Ventura’s photowalk had a beautiful afternoon. The sun was shinning with a few clouds in the sky. We had a great turn out with 28 photo walkers. We all met at the base of the Ventura Pier. We decided to take a group photo.

There were many different groups join our photowalk from Flickr, Zooomr, Betterphoto and the Ventura County Camera Club. After everyone got to know each other, we then walked down California St to the San Buenaventura City Hall. After the city hall, we walked down Main St. to the San Buenaventura Mission. We then walked down Figueroa St to Surfers Point. We ended the photo walk at the Ventura Pier for a great sunset and the start of a chilly evening with the wind kicking up and providing a little wind chill.

I would like to thank all that joined us on the Ventura Photowalk and really enjoyed talking to all.

Northville Recap

5 November, 2007 (13:33) | Michigan, flickr, midwest, photowalking, zooomr | By: brettveenstra

Last week a group of photographers, mostly met over the internet met in downtown Northville, Michigan.

The majority of cameras were Canon DSLR, and a number of different lenses were used.

We had perfect weather and great surroundings while taking in the last few hours of daylight.

After meeting up, we took a quick walk to Mills Race Park, passing through Ford Field. After the park, we eventually wound our way into downtown Northville.

Here’s some results:

Falmouth Photowalk

Our First Photowalk - Falmouth MA

Falmouth PhotoWalk Map

On our first Photowalk Dad and I went first to Spohr Gardens in Falmouth, MA. This is a garden that is tended by a group of volunteers and is open to the use and enjoyment of the public. Although the season for the garden had already peaked we still found much to photograph. We were also testing out my new piece of equipment that will be essential on future Photowalks. It is my GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr.

This device is a GPS unit that you can synchronize with your digital camera’s internal clock. When you are done with your walk, you upload the photos and the GPS data to GiSTEQ software and automatically the GPS data that you have collected with the GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr is added to your photos. Then you can see a record of the physical locations of where you shot each of your photos on your Photowalk. Then you can upload your photos automatically to photo hosting sites like Flickr and Zooomr and your photos are automatically geotagged. (I have found that you need to upload to Flickr through the GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr software for the images to be automatically geotagged, however the photos can be uploaded to Zooomr through the Zooomr uploaded and because there is GPS data attached to the image it automatically shows as being geotagged.

Dad and I took many photographs around Spohr Gardens. The place is a really nice one if you enjoy photographing flowers and small wildlife and birds and bugs. However the season for such things had passed so we didn’t stay too long, however we did get some photos while we were there. I mean that’s the point, right.

So around Spohr Gardens Dad and I took many photographs and tried a few different tricks and techniques. When we had exhausted our options and made it through the gardens we decided that our next location would be Nobska Lighthouse and Nellie Point. The day was a beautiful and clear one and there were not many people at the lighthouse so it made for even better shooting conditions. We could take our time and use different lenses and try different angles and shots without having to wait for anyone to move out of our shots.

We walked down to Nellie Point, an area on the cliff over looking the water that was named for Nellie Anne Hefferan Casey who died on Flight 11 on September 11, 2001. There is a plaque there and the spot is both beautiful and solemn. Nellie Point has to be one of the best places to watch the sun rise and set on the whole of Cape Cod. Looking out across the water to the Elizabeth Islands and seeing the beautiful watercraft is so calming. We stood there and took shot after shot of the water and the boats upon it as well as the lighthouse itself.

After that location we headed home only to spot a classic car show happening at the Falmouth Harbor Green. We stopped and walked around marveling at the different cars and trucks on display. On more than one occasion my Dad would point out a car that he had as a kid. They were some beautiful machines. We took many photos and then headed home.

Each photo from this walk is hosted in sets at both Flickr and Zooomr and was automatically geotagged using the GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr. I am on the lookout for other Photowalkers in New England who would like to Photowalk areas of Cape Cod, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont or New Hampshire. I will be organizing some fall Photowalks in some of those areas so if you are interested leave a comment here and we can network. Whether you are interested in photographing on the walk or filming the walk I’m looking for people who are interested in both.

Let’s get a New England Photowalking group started.

I have failed to mention to you one great website that any photographer could use for some inspiration. Photografr.com has emerged as a top place to find really good images from around the photo sharing ‘net. With several posts a week, you’ll find a wide array of images from Zooomr, Flickr, and a few other sites. I know I’ve found some really nice photos there. Both images in this post were covered there recently.

Full Moon Photowalk

14 June, 2007 (09:54) | RandyMan, night shoot, photowalking, southern california, trevor, zooomr | By: trevorcarpenter

Moon & Tree Rise
A couple of weeks ago, on May 31, 2005, RandyMan, VanillaGirl, and a friend (Kenneth) went out for our very first Full Moon Photowalk. Much fun was had by all!

A few weeks prior, RandyMan had scouted out a great location for us to catch the moonrise over a beautiful hillside. He had researched the approximate location for the moonrise, on the horizon, and found our location based on that. Great job RandyMan!

We set out in the early evening, before sunset to get set up. Once we arrived, we scouted out a couple of possible locations that could have worked well. We finally decided upon a nice hillside, just about a hundred yards from the roadside. At this point, we knew that we had over an hour before it started to get dark, so we hiked back down for some roadside photowalking.

For me, this event highlighted why I love group photowalking. While we were scampering up and down the highway, RandyMan was able to share great tips and wisdom for shooting. I know that Kenneth and I were each able to grow and learn in just a short time.

Rumbling GiantsBut what made this event even more special was watching a father share his skill with his daughter. In the midst of our shooting, VanillaGirl was able to watch as three Christian men interacted, laughed, and learned.

Continuing on, we finished up on the roadside and decided to jam up the road a bit and shoot some great looking erosion.

If we ended there, we’d still have had a great photowalk. But we were there to shoot the moon, so as the sun was setting, we headed back up the hillside. (I’m sure I lost 10 pounds hiking up and down that hillside.)DSC_0441

Once in position, we experimented with shooting the hillside of the alleged moonrise. In the minutes before we could see any moon light, we shot some time-lapsed car lights traversing the windy road across the canyon from us. Many of those shots received “fave” markings on Zooomr.

During Zooomr’s two weeks in the wilderness, many of the committed conversed and got to know each other over the Ustream.tv IRC. During that time, we had unprecedented access to the likes of Thomas Hawk, Kristopher Tate, and even the great Robert Scoble. Scoble offered up some tips for shooting the moon back then, and many others tossed in their wisdom. I copied those logs and sent them to by Blackberry for safekeeping.

So, when we were preparing for the moon to rise, I grabbed my Blackberry and recalled the recommendations. They worked out well. I’m so glad to have such a great community of photography fans and experts.

We shot many great shots of the moon as it rose over the hillside. RandyMan’s 300mm helped him achieve some even closer shots than I, with my 200mm. None-the-less I got some great shots that I’m proud of and glad to share with everyone.

As the evening came to a close, we all seemed to be satisfied with our work. I know I am.

Take a look at our Zooomr Photo Set.

[edit note: Zooomr will occasionally be upgrading their toolset, so if the photoset isn't working, be patient and try again another time.]

Help Zooomr not die!

30 May, 2007 (08:59) | help, zooomr | By: trevorcarpenter

I don’t have a lot of time to write a well written post. So, I’ll just throw out the net and see what I catch.

Zooomr Mark III launched last night. But then it crashed 15 minutes later. Most of my photos here are hosted there, so you won’t see anything until it recovers. I don’t know how long that will take.

So, go out and read the articles I added below, and make sure to comment. Then, if you have any contacts at a large tech company, you know, Sun, IBM, Google, Dell, etc., contact them and convince them to reach out a helping hand.

Basically Zooomr’s server died. No hope to revive it. Just dead. So they need a new server. This costs money. Many of the ZooomrNation have been donating cash, via PayPal. You can too, just hit Zooomr and scroll to the bottom, you’ll see the PayPal button.

Full Moon Photowalk

15 May, 2007 (04:13) | night shoot, photowalking, southern california, zooomr | By: trevorcarpenter

moon-1moon-1 Hosted on Zooomr

On Thursday, May 31 there’s going to be a full moon. A good friend, Randy, has suggested that we take some time in the evening to do some shooting.

So, we’re meeting at a semi-remote location in the hills above Somis, CA. You’re welcome to join us, you’ll just have to contact me first. I’ll give you a more precise location once you contact me.

We’ll be visiting a nice rock quarry, which should provide for some nice moon lit shots as well.

Get paid! No one takes advantage of me.

3 May, 2007 (08:13) | flickr, news, photo-website, trevor, zooomr | By: trevorcarpenter

Over at JMG Galleries I just read a great post discussing the dilemma of getting paid for your photography. I don’t mean quitting your day job, just getting compensated for your hard work and creativity.

The article is titled, “The Dark Side of Flickr: Photo Phishing By Corporate America“. My interest is not in slamming Flickr, I’ve got a Flickr account. I’m more interested in raising your awareness about getting screwed by just giving your photos away for free.

I understand wanting to support people, just make sure you find a balance. I mean, of course, Thomas Hawk allows most bloggers to use his Flickr and Zooomr photos. That’s great. But I can tell you for sure that if some graphic designer or publication wants to publish one of his shots, he’s getting paid.
