Downtown Palo Alto Photowalk

18 August, 2009 (04:00) | SF, announcement, downtown, photowalking | By: trevor

Hey all you SF Bay area photogs! Come on out and join us for a fun fall photowalk, in downtown Palo Alto. This is the first photowalk I’m organizing to be sponsored! To top that off, we have two sponsors!

Red River Paper and Edge Tech Corp have stepped up to help make this photowalk a bit more interesting. Everyone who attends will entered in a simple drawing to possibly receive one of a variety of products from Red River or Edge Tech. I must add, PhotowalkList provided the hook up with the folks at Red River Paper. PhotowalkList provides a great service, not unlike my original desire for PhotoWalking.org. If you’re looking for a photowalk in your area, you’re bound to find one at PhotowalkList!

It begins at 6:30 pm, on Friday evening, October 16th. We’ll be meeting at the source of the city’s name, El Palo Alto. It’s a redwood tree adjacent to El Camino Park. See the map below for the details.

The custom photowalk map below shows you several of the highlights for this photowalk. Palo Alto’s retro downtown is touted as being very pedestrian friendly, so we should have a great time.

In case you didn’t know, Palo Alto is basically the birthplace of the Silicon Valley. All the old school tech companies got started here. On this photowalk we’ll walk right by Facebook’s HQ, and just a short distance away is Stanford University.

So, Lowepro has decided to offer up several of their new camera bags, perfect for photowalking, and I’ll be giving them away at this photowalk!

Great chance for out-of-towners to photowalk in SF

Golden Dawn No Time for Sleep Their Minds Are Filled With Big Ideas, Images and Distorted Facts Finding a Treasure the bridge

This past year, I told myself that I’d make every effort to attend the MacWorld Expo & Conference this year. As the event approached, I even thought I’d be able to pull it off. With my in-laws in northern California, it’s easy to pull SF related trips together.

Anyway, our NorCal trip had to be much earlier this year, so the opportunity came and went. Next year.

In the mean time, I’ve been made aware of one great opportunity for any attendees to MacWord, and any other Bay area photographers. On Friday, January 18th, a large group will be gathering to photowalk. Right now, in leiu of another location, they’re planning to meet at the Moscone Center, the location of MacWord.

So, if you’re in town for MacWorld, or want to attend another great photowalk in San Francisco, plan on attending this one!

Great recap of Stanford Photowalk

Back on October 1st, Thomas Hawk, Robert Scoble, and friends photowalked Stanford University. They had a great time, and of course Scoble had his camera. Hawk recapped it, and I think you should take a read.

Photowalking Downtown SF Recap

6 November, 2007 (20:12) | SF, night shoot, photowalking | By: Andrew Moore

On November 5th, 2007 around 20-30 photographers met in the Hilton Lobby to head out to Downtown San Francisco and North Beach at around 5PM. We started out in the Hilton Lobby and got some great shots from the 26th floor looking out toward Coit Tower.

For The Love Of A Girl Survive

From the Hilton all 30 of us headed toward Embarcadero buildings to shoot up at the beautiful night sky.

Bright lights big city

After shooting up at the night sky we headed to the Hyatt Regency Hotel right at Embarcadero for some shots inside this amazing architectural building. From the outside the building is cool but on the inside, it’s even cooler. I had never known you could even get inside to this massive corridor with some great shots…

Gardens and Steps

and from the 12th floor…

Sharp Temperature Drops

Leaving the Hyatt we were all in hunger and we found a place that could seat all 30 of us at one long massive table at Osha on Embarcadero. As we ate the Ammmaaazzing Thai food we chatted with our new neighbors and shot away at the table side. An hour had passed and we were ready to get out and shoot again so we headed up to 2nd street to get some good architectural shots at night again.

Star Light, Star Bright, First Stars I See Tonight

Overall it was a great night and a chance to meet a lot of new faces. I hope to see you all at the next photowalk again.

You know, I’ve recently realized that we’ve got quite a few people trying to recruit some mighty photowalking armies, all over the world. So, I guess I should list them for you here.

Are you photowalking in another area? Then, add yourself in the comments. If you’re game, I can even help you organize and grow your events. Just let me know.

Marin Headlands Photowalk Recap

13 October, 2007 (15:58) | SF, marin, photowalking | By: trevorcarpenter

Just That Spot of Hope

So, it looks like the rain scared away quite a few from this amazing opportunity.

I met up with Thomas Hawk in SF, after solo-photowalking all day, and we drove together over the Golden Gate to meet up with everyone. The problem was that some poor guy had decided to try and take his own life on the bridge. So, as we drove by and saw all the rescue personnel providing care, the traffic has slowed to a crawl. After the fact, we discovered that they eventually closed the bridge and many photowalkers didn’t make it at all.

Big Plans on the Horizon

TH and I arrived almost an hour late and couldn’t find anyone. I hadn’t considered that our cell coverage would have been compromised in that location also.

Karen (persnicketydame) caught up with us in short order and the crew was complete a bit later with Prophead and Mike Dunn.

We were at the old Fort Cronkhite and Photobunkeringshot for a bit, focusing on the low light, beachhead, and the nice lagoon. Knowing that the forecasted rain was approaching, we wanted to hit the abandoned bunkers on the hill and of course the great view of the bridge and city lights. So we loaded back in the cars and headed up the hill.
At the bunkers, we found darkness and graffiti. It was kind of spooky as we wandered around inside the abandoned bunkers. Several found the graffiti and the darkness a ripe display of tempting subject. So, we spent a good deal of time as each of us discovered our own oddity.

Golden GateOnce we reached the top of the bunkers, we began to feel the rain try and open up. This was our sign to quickly reposition to the city-facing side of the hill, for our finale. We had to rush down the one-way route, tracing our way back to the great look out vista, four our few cityscape shots, just before the rain came down.Tripod Related Injury

Once we each got a few shots, off we were, to Sausalito for a couple of beers. On a side note, we had our first recorded photowalking injury too. For the details, talk to Prophead.

Marin Headlands Photowalk

See you tomorrow

So, I’m heading to Northern California in a few weeks. While I’m there, I hope to solo photowalk a bit, and family photowalk a bit. One thing I’ll also be doing is heading over to the Bay area for a day trip.

So, I’ve set up a photowalk with Thomas Hawk & gang for October 9, 2007, at 6pm (note the change). We’re going to meet somewhere off the 101 fwy, in the Marin Headlands. I’ll update a more precise location soon enough. In the mean time, tell all your photogeek friends and plan to meet us there.

You won’t regret it!
