A group of photographers, led by Thomas Hawk and Daniel “Smoothdude” Krieger, gathered in New York City on the afternoon of December 15th to brave the winter chill for a photowalking session that stretched up and down the island of Manhattan. The expedition began in Washington Square Park, descended into the subways, then moved uptown for a tour of Harlem and the Columbia University campus.

Kicking things off in Washington Square Park, our group made its way through the streets of Greenwich Village. Our tour passed various buildings, storefronts, quirky New Yorkers, and even slowed down to watch Daniel fearlessly bring traffic to a halt in an attempt at a mid-crosswalk group photo. I suppose one thing photowalkers have in common is an inherent fascination with taking pictures of each other and their cameras.

Once reassembled from our walk through the Village, we hit the subway for some quick shots of the transit system, and the city’s various underground art displays.

A quick train ride took us up to 125th Street for a walk through the heart of Harlem, where New York City’s classic Apollo theater is surrounded by an increasing number of retail stores, chain pharmacies, and fast food restaurants. This clash of culture and commercialism has inspired many sidewalk activists, most of whom were quite willing subjects.

After finishing up in Harlem, it was down to Morningside Heights (but not before warming up and talking gear over a few welcome beverages). Columbia University’s trees were wrapped in white Christmas lights, and its buildings and sculptures seemed made to be photographed. One cannot help but feel out of place in the middle of such a wide open area on the otherwise dense island of Manhattan.

The final destination for our photowalk was an expedition to the bowels of Columbia University. Beneath the campus, refuse, decay, and industrial imagery were abound.

A good time was had by all at the NYC photowalk. If anyone has photos that have not yet been linked here, drop me a line and I will add them to the list.
