Washington DC Photowalk

10 June, 2008 (09:08) | announcement, dc, photowalking | By: trevor

As many of you know, my wife and I planned on celebrating our 10th anniversary on a trip to the UK and Ireland. Due to circumstances outside our control, we had to downsize our trip. So, we have set our sights on Washington DC.

This brings the discussion my desire to photowalk everywhere. So, on August 22nd at 6pm all those who can attend should arrive at the Lincoln Memorial, on the National Mall, in Washington, DC. We’ll be catching the sunset there, and wandering on down the Mall. As the evening arrives, my hope is to capture as many of the wonderfully historical monuments and memorials in the dark night. Most of these sights are well lit in the evening, so we should have a great opportunity. I’ve constructed a nice map, shown below. This photowalk should be about 3 miles, so be prepared to walk a bit.

Important points:

  • Meet on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, at 6pm.
  • Be prepared to walk a few miles.
  • Be prepared to shoot some low light stuff too. (tripod!)

And as usual, afterwards, we’ll hit a local pub for a drink or coffee.

Here’s the Upcoming link.

I’d love to meet any of my photowalking cohorts in the Washington DC area, so please make sure to mark this one on your calendar!

***Edit***
Jeff Revell quickly pointed out to me that the majority of the National Mall is a part of the National Park System. This means that the sometimes ill-informed security aren’t just security guards. They’re real, genuine cops; The Park Police. I’ll go toe-to-toe with a security guard any day. A real cop though, no thanks. So, head over to Jeff’s article about getting a free permit for using a tripod in the National Park, and another one for using it on the Capital grounds.

Gettysburg Photowalk Recap

28 May, 2008 (16:49) | dc, eastcoast, photowalking | By: macmoov

Statas.jpgBright blue skies, cotton candy clouds, and mid-70 degree temperatures supplied the background for the May 24th Photowalk in Gettysburg PA. There were many Memorial Day activities in and around the city for the weekend and the weather couldn’t have been better. We had 21 people attend the photowalk and they came from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. The group was comprised of people from various local photoclubs and Flickr groups:
Central Pennsylvania Shutterbugs Flickr Group
Gettysburg Flickr Group
Gaithersburg Camera Club
FONZ Photoclub

10 February, 2008 (17:40) | dc, photowalking, recap | By: macmoov

The Bethesda photowalk group had a great time walking the streets of Bethesda on a sunny afternoon. All week we had threats of rain and chances of snow, but the weather turned out great. We had 26 people who came from throughout the DC metro area, and one visiting from New York. The group was comprised of people from the Gaithersburg Camera Club, National Zoo Photo Club, and various members of Flickr.

The photowalk started at the plaza level of the Bethesda Metro stop and we walked a 2 mile loop around the city. After the walk a small group had dinner at the Daily Grill to swap stories.

Here is a selection of photos from some of the group. Additional photos can be found with with the following Flickr Tag searches. Flickr1, Flickr2

Bethesda MD Photowalk

14 January, 2008 (13:41) | announcement, dc, photowalking | By: macmoov

Bethesda Metro Station Several photographers in the DC Metro area will be meeting on February 9th at 2:00 PM for a photowalk of Bethesda Maryland. We will meet at the street level plaza of the Bethesda Metro station.

The route is about 2 miles long. The road along Woodmont offers back ally shooting (in a safe environment) and also some older buildings and store fronts. Wisconsin road is your typical restaurant row with newer modern store fronts that can give you chances for street shooting and neon/light trails in the evening.

Are you photowalking in another area? Then, add yourself in the comments. If you’re game, I can even help you organize and grow your events. Just let me know.

DC Photowalking: Success!

29 June, 2007 (14:53) | dc, photowalking | By: keith

I hereby declare the first official DC Photowalk a success! There were three of us: Raoul and Ligia Pop, and myself. Not a large group, obviously, but large enough. We had a terrific time, were treated to a rare tour of one of Old Town’s oldest private residences, and (I, at least) picked up some great photography tips along the way!

If you’re interested in a little more detail, you can read Raoul’s write-up or my own–no sense in repeating what’s already been said. Alternatively, you can skip straight to the photos!

DC Photowalking on Saturday

21 June, 2007 (07:14) | dc, photowalking | By: keith

This weekend’s DC photowalk is still on, and it looks as though the Alexandria waterfront and surrounding neighborhood is going to be our destination. It’s not as Metro-accessible as other locations, but what it lacks in convenience it makes up for with character. There’s plenty to see and photograph, including some of the area’s oldest architecture, the waterfront, and (of course) the people!

While we’re adjusting the itinerary, we’re also going to aim for an early morning shoot, to beat the afternoon crowding and heat.

When: 23 June @ 7:30AM

Where: The Torpedo Factory plaza, waterfront side. Directions, parking information, and maps are available via the Torpedo Factory web site.

Contact: Keith (This is an SMS relay, so keep it short :))

If you’re planning on meeting up, drop me a line at the address above and include your contact information. If we miss one another in the plaza, we’ll make alternative arrangements. Goes without saying that we’ll be the group of people huddled around comparing cameras and gear!
