Hey all you SF Bay area photogs! Come on out and join us for a fun fall photowalk, in downtown Palo Alto. This is the first photowalk I’m organizing to be sponsored! To top that off, we have two sponsors!
Red River Paper and Edge Tech Corp have stepped up to help make this photowalk a bit more interesting. Everyone who attends will entered in a simple drawing to possibly receive one of a variety of products from Red River or Edge Tech. I must add, PhotowalkList provided the hook up with the folks at Red River Paper. PhotowalkList provides a great service, not unlike my original desire for PhotoWalking.org. If you’re looking for a photowalk in your area, you’re bound to find one at PhotowalkList!
It begins at 6:30 pm, on Friday evening, October 16th. We’ll be meeting at the source of the city’s name, El Palo Alto. It’s a redwood tree adjacent to El Camino Park. See the map below for the details.
The custom photowalk map below shows you several of the highlights for this photowalk. Palo Alto’s retro downtown is touted as being very pedestrian friendly, so we should have a great time.
In case you didn’t know, Palo Alto is basically the birthplace of the Silicon Valley. All the old school tech companies got started here. On this photowalk we’ll walk right by Facebook’s HQ, and just a short distance away is Stanford University.

Come join us for a wonderful afternoon of photowalking in downtown San Luis Obispo, on California’s Central Coast.
Just about 3 hours from San Jose and Santa Monica, it truly embodies the Central Coast. An easy drive could draw in photowalkers from both ends of the golden state. For those wanting to make it a weekend, Morro Rock, Montana de Oro, and some beautiful wine country are all nearby.
Downtown we’ll find one of California’s fabulous old missions. There’s also several blocks of a beautiful downtown business area.
The plan is to meet at 2pm on June 20th, 2009, in front of the Old Mission. We’ll shoot around there for at least an hour, allowing any late-comers to wander in and catch us. Then we’ll move closer to the downtown area, working our way northward on Higuera Street. At Osos or Santa Rosa Streets, we’ll turn and head back down on Marsh Street.
It should be an easy walk, and a fun time. I’ll most likely hang around afterward and get a bite to eat and a beer when we’re done.
Ever wanted to photograph the beautiful rocky coastline of the Central Coast of California? Early next year, 2009, a small group will be gathering in the California State Park, Montana del Oro. That’s near Los Osos, Morro Bay, and San Luis Obispo.
If you’re from Southern California, you MUST find a way to hit this photowalk! Maybe get together with a group and camp for the weekend, or just get a cheap motel. Same goes for Northern Californians!
In fact, I don’t care where you’re from, you should make it out for this photowalk.

This Sunday, November 2, 2008 there will be a 2.5 mile photowalk in and around the Portland, Oregon bridges. You may not know it, but Portland has a bunch of awesome bridges, and they’re great for shooting.

Come join us in beautiful downtown Ann Arbor. We’ll have plenty of opportunities to shoot interesting architecture and other scenery in this college-town.

Come one, come all, to the first Neon Photowalk.
On October 3rd, 2008, we’ll be meeting up in downtown Sacramento, CA to shoot some sweet neon. This one will be better with more people, as we’ll be shooting after sundown.
We’ll meet at 7pm, and the location will be updated shortly. For now, put it on your calendar and plan on attending.

I needed to add a little bit of information. First, I think we’re going to meet in front of the California State Capitol Building. This should make it easy for everyone to find us. Second, I took some good suggestions from Thomas Hawk’s blog and fabricated a basic map of some possible locations we’ll want to photograph. They’re on the map below. (Notice the green tag, that’s where we’ll be meeting.
As many of you know, my wife and I planned on celebrating our 10th anniversary on a trip to the UK and Ireland. Due to circumstances outside our control, we had to downsize our trip. So, we have set our sights on Washington DC.
This brings the discussion my desire to photowalk everywhere. So, on August 22nd at 6pm all those who can attend should arrive at the Lincoln Memorial, on the National Mall, in Washington, DC. We’ll be catching the sunset there, and wandering on down the Mall. As the evening arrives, my hope is to capture as many of the wonderfully historical monuments and memorials in the dark night. Most of these sights are well lit in the evening, so we should have a great opportunity. I’ve constructed a nice map, shown below. This photowalk should be about 3 miles, so be prepared to walk a bit.

Jeff Revell quickly pointed out to me that the majority of the National Mall is a part of the National Park System. This means that the sometimes ill-informed security aren’t just security guards. They’re real, genuine cops; The Park Police. I’ll go toe-to-toe with a security guard any day. A real cop though, no thanks. So, head over to Jeff’s article about getting a free permit for using a tripod in the National Park, and another one for using it on the Capital grounds.
I know this is last minute. I’ve discussed the possibility of an indoor, studio lighting based event on the Flickr forums for a few weeks. I just now secured a location and so I’m going to go ahead and try to make this happen.
The location details are at the Upcoming page for this event. We’ll meet at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, East County Station, at 1:30pm, this Saturday, April 26th, 2008. If you think you can make it, please try. I’d love to have more than a handful of people.
We’ll all bring any lighting gear we have. The goal is to have us all set up our “studios” around the room and practice shooting. I’m going to try and get a couple of volunteer “models” to help keep everyone busy. The real learning will come when we can help each other learn a bit more.
Even if you can’t attend, please spread the word to anyone in our area!

I have some bad news friends. My attendance at this photowalk won’t be happening. I’m still hoping that you all will attend and have a great time. Our anniversary trip has been forced to remain in North America. We hope to make it out next year, though.

This summer, I’m taking my wife to Europe to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We’ll be in London for several days, and I’ve decided to join Phill Price in organizing a photowalk.
On Saturday, August 16th, 2008, we’ll be meeting at the Wellington Arch, in St. James Park at the Hyde Park Corner. (just look at the map below). Be there by 1 pm, or you might get left behind.
This will be my first time to photowalk in London. I’ve been there before, years ago. However, I’ll also be meeting a few of my online photography friends for the first time.
