Washington DC Photowalk

10 June, 2008 (09:08) | announcement, dc, photowalking | By: trevor

As many of you know, my wife and I planned on celebrating our 10th anniversary on a trip to the UK and Ireland. Due to circumstances outside our control, we had to downsize our trip. So, we have set our sights on Washington DC.

This brings the discussion my desire to photowalk everywhere. So, on August 22nd at 6pm all those who can attend should arrive at the Lincoln Memorial, on the National Mall, in Washington, DC. We’ll be catching the sunset there, and wandering on down the Mall. As the evening arrives, my hope is to capture as many of the wonderfully historical monuments and memorials in the dark night. Most of these sights are well lit in the evening, so we should have a great opportunity. I’ve constructed a nice map, shown below. This photowalk should be about 3 miles, so be prepared to walk a bit.

Important points:

  • Meet on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, at 6pm.
  • Be prepared to walk a few miles.
  • Be prepared to shoot some low light stuff too. (tripod!)

And as usual, afterwards, we’ll hit a local pub for a drink or coffee.

Here’s the Upcoming link.

I’d love to meet any of my photowalking cohorts in the Washington DC area, so please make sure to mark this one on your calendar!

***Edit***
Jeff Revell quickly pointed out to me that the majority of the National Mall is a part of the National Park System. This means that the sometimes ill-informed security aren’t just security guards. They’re real, genuine cops; The Park Police. I’ll go toe-to-toe with a security guard any day. A real cop though, no thanks. So, head over to Jeff’s article about getting a free permit for using a tripod in the National Park, and another one for using it on the Capital grounds.

Tried responding to the Upcoming event, but their site just horks out and throws an error.

Anyway, I haven’t been on a group photowalk in some time, so count me in! Looking forward to meeting you (and Mrs. Trevor) face-to-face!

David, Who’s getting the permit for the Tripod? Been reading some blogs on line of late, and there’s some controversy on when you need a permit for your Tripod.

@Glen, I’m working on the permit issue right now. Jeff Revell has a great article discussing this exact problem. I’ll update the post with an edit soon.

Hey Trevor,

Any photowalk of D.C. has got to include some museum time. I did these couple of photowalks in D.C. a couple of years ago and still remember them fondly..

[...] I have been informed of two upcoming photowalks that might be of interest to you.  Trevor Carpenter of Photowalking.Org fame is going to be coming to my backyard in August and he would like to host a photowalk.  Okay, actually the photowalk will take place amongst the Washington DC monuments, not my backyard.  For more information, please check out his post by clicking here. Hey Trevor… It does sound great… I wish I could be there to enjoy your Photowalk. Do you need a permit from the city to have a group of people going around?
May I ask you a favor? Is there any way to mention in one of your posts about our Photowalk that we are doing here in Fort Lauderdale, FL on June 22 - 10:00am
here is the link:

Check out my June 5 posts on ”tripods”. The photo was taken by me in 1968 back in the good old days when you didn’t need a permit and you could even shoot naked!!! Can we bring back the good old days. I’m going to try to make your photowalk with you.

I’ve run into similar problems at the monuments and memorials from private security guards, so I finally went to the horse’s mouth and asked a U.S. Park Ranger from the National Park Service. He said tripod photography is allowed in the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials on two conditions. 1) Your tripod must have rubber feet and 2) you can’t impede the flow of traffic.

That said, if there’s a place to get a permit, I’d recommend that just so you’re 100% covered.

Shoot! I usually go, when I do go, to DC in August to visit my son. But this year school is started by Aug. 22 so I have to stay here. Of course it is the WORST time to go there but the city just knocks me out. So look him up for me, will you? Give him my love! LOL

I go into D.C. to shoot the monuments and museums a few times each year, I’ve never been asked for a permit but I have had the rangers make sure I have rubber feet. All of my interactions with the park police have been positive. I almost always go at night, I’m not sure if people shooting during daylight hours have had the same experience. I will be getting a tripod permit just in case, but I did not realize one was necessary until reading this post.

Trevor,
I am sure by now that you have heard of the World Wide Photowalk being sponsored by Scott Kelby. Since you will be in town, I wanted to offer up an official invite to you to join me in Old Town Alexandria which just happens to be the day after your DC photowalk. I am going to try and make yours but 2 photowalks in 2 days? I don’t know if the wife will be able to handle that :-)

@Jeff

Yeah, I read about Scott’s photowalks this morning. I must say, bummer that he’s using the very community oriented photowalk as a marketing tool, for his new book. It makes me sad.

I sure hope that those not online so much won’t associate all photowalking as a gimmick or something.

For the DC Photowalkers, I knew that Scott’s photowalk would draw away some participants. That too is a bummer. Of course, you should honor your wife and not over do it. I’ll be on my anniversary trip, whilst in DC, so there’s no way I could do both.

Even if I were available, I’m not sure if I’d want to support Scott’s misuse of the photowalk.

Thanks for your invitation, though. I appreciate it. I know your intentions are honorable.

[...] Wow, that went fast. I am sorry to say that both sessions are now completely full. I will be sure to let you know if any slots open back up. If you still want to do some photowalking but couldn’t get into one of mine, you might be interested to know that Trevor Carpenter from Photowalking.Org is going to be in the DC area on the night before (Aug. 22) conducting a night time photowalk around the Mall and the Monuments. Are we getting an overall permit to use tripods or should we each be getting one?

You know Geoff, the websites made me think that the permits were issued to individuals. I don’t want to make them think we’re bigger or more official than we are. That may limit our ability to simply shoot photos.

I’s suggest that anyone who thinks they need one, simply get one on their own.

I was looking at the map and if I can make a suggestions on the route. Making a dip by the WW2 memorial is well worth our time.

Also, parking may be an issue for some, especially since there’s no Metro stop near the Lincoln Memorial. I think you can park on the street near the basin. Have to ask my friend at work tomorrow.

You definitely planned a long route!
