My Top 5 Future Photowalking Locations
ProBlogger is running a group writing project. I’ve decided to join the crowd. Below you’ll find my Top 5 locations I’d love to photowalk. It’d be great if one day photowalking.org can grow to a level of participation that photowalkers can plan vacations around great places to photograph. I’d love to be able to contact a local photographer and plan a photowalk when I’m visiting a new place. In no particular order, let’s get started.
Brooklyn Bridge Hosted on Zooomr
1. New York City
I’ve been to NYC once before, to celebrate my anniversary with my wife. We had a great time, and even took some photos. However, they were just tourist photos. They’re great for our memories, but not great enough to share. Since then, I’ve discovered my passion for photography. So now I’d love to return with dSLR (& my new Holga) in hand to document my view of the infamous New York City. I’d be willing to get up early just to capture the empty streets. I’d love to find that one great angle, never seen before, of the Brooklyn Bridge. I’d love to be as close as possible and capture the entire length of “the” statue with the Holga. I’d have a blast wondering around SoHo all day long, shooting its uniqueness. And what would a trip to the big apple be without photos of the subway?
London England 5-5-07 Hosted on Zooomr
2. London, England
London is also a city I’ve visited twice before, but I wasn’t thinking about taking pictures. I was 14 the first time, and barely 17 the next. Both times I was with student groups, doing the tourist thing. This time I’d be refocused to capture the heart of a city dripping with history and wonderful culture. Big Ben would be in my
sites, but during a downpour or other great weather driving everyone else indoors. You can’t pass up the stone roads and old buildings in a city like London.
Morning at the Wailing Wall Hosted on Zooomr
3. Israel
I’ve never been to Israel, but I’d sure love to visit. Jerusalem, the Jordan River, the Western Wall, all great historical locations that I’d love to photograph. Israel, being the homeland of the Children of God, Christianity, and so much important historical locations makes it a very desirable location.
edit_CRW_7715b Hosted on Zooomr
4. Rome
Rome is also a great place. If you’re going to visit the world’s great photogenic places, Rome must be on that list. There’s too much to list, the Coliseum, the Vatican, and so much more.
Mt. Whitney Sunrise, Arch View Hosted on Zooomr
5. Mt. Whitney
I can’t just have urban locations. I’ve visited the Sierra Nevada mountains of California many times, however Mt. Whitney tops the list. I couldn’t pass up such a beautiful location that’s so close to home. I’ve actually been there twice, and know firsthand how beautiful it is. The campsites, the switchbacks, and duh! the peak are all wonderful.
Since I’ve decided to take my photography more seriously, something exciting has come over me. I find myself looking at everything with composition and lighting angle. Everywhere I go I’m looking for a great way to shoot. When I’m sitting at a stop light, I look at the “No U-turn” sign with a thought on how to get a great shot. I’m really loving this new element of my life.

If you’re ever planning on a wonderful photgraphy trip, try Tokyo, Japan, I made thousands of pictures there, you’ll find so many different things to picture that you don’t know where to start… I found the Tsukiji fish market extraordinary to photowalk! Early morning call!

You should try Suriname too. Lot’s of beautiful jungle, nice people, colonial buildings. I walked through our capital once and made some pictures. A small taste of Paramaribo: http://www.afewgoodnotes.com/2007/02/03/paramaribo-the-good-stuff-the-pictures/

Anyway, good luck with the Top 5 and photowalking.

Great post. I might substitute Athens for Rome, but that’s just me. Other than that, I couldn’t agree more with the choices. Once summer gets here, I’ll be doing the odd walk here in Vancouver. You definitely shared some of the places I would love to go and take pictures. What type of dSLR do you have?

Hey, I’m glad I came across your blog — it looks interesting! I went on a trip once to NYC and then London, and I got a ton of great pictures only to find that the film in my old camera wasn’t put in right… Man, did I feel stupid. =P

Great list, and great concept for a blog. First time reader, but i’ll be adding you to my feed.
Another to add to your list if you haven’t been is Vancouver. A Very photogenic city. Was there for a conference, spent a couple hours walking and got some good shots.

Trevor, what a cool idea for a blog. The list is great and must have been impossible to reduce. I am not much of a photographer but two of my best friends and my daughter are all avid. I will insist that they check this out. Been trying to get Steve to start a photog blog. Maybe this will be his inspiration.

Great choices! You makes me homesick for my home state with Mt. Whitney and your fantastic shots of the tide pools. Two more for your potential list: Death Valley and Mexico City - both are achingly photogenic!
Do you ever browse PBase? You will find lots of inspiration there. http://www.pbase.com
Cheers!

Another place to consider visiting is Barcelona. I would love to go back there and take another 1000 pictures of the many architectural works of Antoni Gaudi. It’s still one of my favorite cities in the world.

Tarek! You are so right. I can’t believe I forgot Egypt. Maybe I’ll add it to the Israel trip. A little hop west would round out that trip nicely.

You’re all over the map here! I’d love to be able to travel to places like this too and spend tons of time photowalking.
With the possible exception of Mt. Whitney, I could spend a year in each of those photowalking and still have only scratched the surface of what’s to see.

@Andrew:
That’s a great idea. Do you know anyone who writes grants? We could figure out a way to do this for 6 months at a time. You and me, then we’ll interview a third person, selecting only the most unique. The three of us will attack the world, with our cameras!
@Buda Baby:
Death Valley! I never thought of that place. That’s not to far either. We take multiple trips to Mammoth Lakes each year, it wouldn’t be too much to take a half day over that direction. Thanks.
@Tyler Ingram:
I have a Nikon D40. I’ll add all the details, including lenses, etc, on my “Authors” page.

Another suggestion is to visit Kiev, Ukraine, with its churches and grand monasteries, parks and palaces. I published some pictures in my old blog http://kievsurvivalguide.blogspot.com . You may find it entertaining. If you come, just let me know, and I will show you Kiev ![]()
