Get paid! No one takes advantage of me.
Over at JMG Galleries I just read a great post discussing the dilemma of getting paid for your photography. I don’t mean quitting your day job, just getting compensated for your hard work and creativity.
The article is titled, “The Dark Side of Flickr: Photo Phishing By Corporate America“. My interest is not in slamming Flickr, I’ve got a Flickr account. I’m more interested in raising your awareness about getting screwed by just giving your photos away for free.
I understand wanting to support people, just make sure you find a balance. I mean, of course, Thomas Hawk allows most bloggers to use his Flickr and Zooomr photos. That’s great. But I can tell you for sure that if some graphic designer or publication wants to publish one of his shots, he’s getting paid.

I’ve actually been paid thousands of dollars over the course of the past year from commercial type folks, magazines, TV commercials, greeting cards, etc. where my photos have been sold.
I license my photos creative commons non-commercial because I want people to be able to use and enjoy my photographs in non-commercial ways but still want to retain my right to sell the photos to commercial interests.
Great blog Trevor!

@Jim: You’re welcome. Thanks for the additional tip.
@ Tom: Good tip, most probably don’t even consider their options. Thanks.

Trevor thanks for mentioning my article.
I too am a big fan of Flickr and other image sharing sites, but if photographers look to keep doing what they love then they need to educate themselves. Awareness is key. A great resource for people to learn more in this area is http://www.editorialphoto.com
They have great resources covering pricing, copyright, etc.
Thanks again…
